MSG: the Craving for Cultural Embrace

Printed by Quentin Mitchell, Vide Press.

"MSG: the Craving for Cultural Embrace" reflects upon my personal experience of being a child of Chinese-Malaysian immigrants, and being confronted by a problematic binary: conforming to the model minority stereotype or rejecting my own culture to fit in.

This autobiographical zine draws upon the past (and present) of East-Asian stereotypes in the Western mainstream, in order to pay respect to those who have paved the way for acceptance and representation. It dissects these stereotypes, discussing them alongside important culture-shapers like cuisine, tv and film.
